Arg, ye land lubbers. We be talkin’ pirates and booty and strange tides, we be.
And now that I have that out of my system, lets talk Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. There are still some misconceptions about this movie, so let us try to lift the shroud of mist, shall we?
First off, according to IMDB and commingsoon.net, Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow, as will Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa. Please rejoice carefully because the rest of the rumors you have heard appear to be true. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will not be unsheathing their swords for this adventure.
Now let us wipe those tears from our eyes and look to the future. It isn’t all bad. The writers clearly felt a female love interest/co-star needed to be present. Enter Penelope Cruz (Vanilla Sky) as Angelica, who is no stranger to Sparrow according to IMDB.
This may be a spoiler, so tread lightly in the next paragraph.
When Cap’n Jack bumps into Angelica at first it sounds like doves start flying, fireworks start booming and orca whales start singing. But when the love induced haze lifts, he isn’t sure if he can trust her. It appears as though she may be a secondary antagonist working for another fearsome captain. But no matter how much I read about that sort of thing, I never know what to believe until I sit down in the theater with my Icee and Swedish Fish.
But there is a deep-sea legend aboard this tale, one as famous as Davey Jones himself. I am of course talking about the other fearsome captain, Blackbeard, played by Ian McShane (Death Race and We are Marshall). Sparrow finds himself aboard Blackbeard’s ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge. The darkly bearded captain also appears to be interested in finding the Fountain of Youth according to commingsoon.net.
Despite the absence of the other well known cast members I can’t help but think this movie has potential. Although I hope the new characters aren’t an attempt to fill the void left behind by those who aren’t returning. That would just sink the whole thing for me.
It does sound though, as if Cruz’s role is close to Knightley’s however. But then again, who knows until we get to that port?
We may not have the love triangle we are used to, but hey, there is potential for another one, just saying… Plus, apparently some french chick is a mermaid! eh? eh?
What do you think about all this?
