The newest film project from director J.J. Abrams (Star Trek) and producer Steven Spielberg (Too many to list) is “Super 8.” No, not a movie about a sub-par motel chain or an old camera media, we’re talking aliens here people.
You may have seen the teaser for this film while attending the theater recently, but for those of you haven’t, click here.
So what we can understand from this trailer is that some sentient being, which can be ruled out as human, is being transported to its new location from area 51 by the U.S. Air Force, presumably in 1979. The creature escapes while being transported, and, well, the rest is up to interpretation at this point.
This movie was all speculation up until the trailer leaked on the internet and was displayed before showings of “Iron Man 2.” And now… well OK, we know the basic plot but director and producer are remaining very hushed about any further details regarding the story.
According to the NY Daily News, rumors began to spread that this film is somehow connected to the shakily-filmed action movie, “Cloverfield,” which isn’t true according deadline.com. So if that is what you are looking for, it seems you are out of luck. And if not, then maybe this is good news.
But although the trailer is shocking and sends each thump coursing through your nervous system, that doesn’t necessarily mean the movie will be just as good. Although with the combination of Abrams and Spielberg, there is little doubt that we will see something truly astounding.
Not to mention, Abrams wrote the script himself, according to IMDB, which is apparently inspired by his movie experiences when he was young.
Either way, filming is set to start this fall and cost $45 million according to deadline.com. Here is hoping for a good modern take on the classic sci-fi genre.
I will keep you posted as I learn more.
